November 2010 — Selemat datang to Pelangi Kabar, the parents' newsletter. Alongside some regular
announcements, this month we want to tell you about a range of school community initiatives and events all welcoming your involvement.
There are now 72 children enrolled full-time in the school and we hope this means part-time enlistment of parents too!
We're expanding the library and need your help requesting donations of books. So far we've had the Natural History Museum in London,
Simon & Schuster and Scholastic agreeing to donate. Ask in the school office for a sample letter to send to your friends and contacts.
Brainiacs and the brave come forward for Quiz Night, a Pelangi Scholarship fundraiser! Join us at Istanbul
Restaurant on 19 November, starts 7pm. 70,000 entry includes food, tickets from school office.
Last week over a dozen parents and staff got together and gave the big school a good spring clean, painting the Year 2/3 classroom,
gardening, deep cleaning the cafe, laying cement around the cafe and making a proper entrance into the school. The photo at the
top of this newsletter shows our kids atop the newly painted climbing frame. Thanks to everybody who gave their time!
We'd love parents to bring plants, herbs and vegetables for the purpose of establishing a working garden that can be an interactive
learning environment for the kids. We also need to do some clean up of the school grounds and plant some flowers around the
walkways. More on the when and where soon.
The next First Friday Social at The Grotto is coming up on 5 November, starts 5.30pm. 60,000 for adults and 40,000 for kids, includes pizza, punch and kids' movie.
The school's Bamboo Cafe is serving up homemade juices and healthy snacks each day. Please feel free to join us for breakfast or lunch, or drop in for a cup of coffee.
Join the parent board to get more involved or have more input into anything from the buildings to the curriculum, to the food served
in the warung. Come along to one of our meetings or just email pelangiparents@zoho.com
Please do use the boards by the warung and the office to promote any child-related activities or businesses.
I grew up in a small Virginia (US) town nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains. I attended undergrad at Radford University in Radford,
VA, where I majored in Elementary Education and minored in Spanish. After studying and living in Mexico I moved back to Virginia
where I taught the second grade for three years in Albemarle County, before moving to San Francisco, CA. Before joining Pelangi
I taught a 2/3 grade multi-age and kindergarten class for Stanford New Schools in East Palo Alto, CA, where I also had the opportunity
to work in other classrooms at my school as a writing coach. After education, reading, writing and cooking are my true passions.
